Smart Meter Concerns: How to Measure What Your Meter Is Actually Emitting

Utility smart meters do not transmit continuously. They send short bursts, and the number and strength of those bursts is what determines exposure inside the adjacent room. Almost nobody discussing this online has actually measured it at their own wall.

What we measure at the meter

RF power density directly at the meter face, then at one meter, then inside the nearest interior room — usually a bedroom or kitchen sharing the wall. The drop between those three points is the number that matters.

  • Peak and average RF readings, since burst transmitters can show a low average with high peaks
  • Interior reading in the adjacent room, where anyone actually spends time
  • Identification of other RF sources in the same room, which are frequently stronger than the meter
  • Wi-Fi routers, mesh nodes and cordless phone bases are commonly the dominant indoor source

Which Florida utility serves you changes the answer

TECO completed its Hillsborough rollout in 2017, Duke Energy Florida covers Pinellas and much of Pasco and Polk, and FPL serves Sarasota and Manatee. Meter hardware and transmission schedules differ, so we identify your utility and meter model as part of the survey.

Measure before you pay to opt out

Opt-out programs carry monthly fees. A survey tells you whether the meter is actually the significant source in your home before you commit to an ongoing charge — and in a large share of homes we survey, it isn't.

Common questions

Can I test a smart meter myself?

A rented broadband RF meter will show burst activity, which is often enough to satisfy curiosity. What a rental will not give you is a calibrated, documented reading with an interior comparison — that is what a survey adds.

Should I move my bed away from the meter wall?

That is a reasonable low-cost step, but measure first. In many homes the interior reading on the far side of that wall is already at background level.

Do you test the whole house or just the meter?

The meter check is part of a standard survey, which also covers RF, magnetic and electric fields throughout the living areas.
