Florida Phosphate Radiation Map
Florida's phosphate mining districts, the residential communities named in gamma radiation litigation, and an address lookup that tells you how close a property sits to a mapped mining district. Free, no signup, and honest about what it can and cannot tell you.
The districts on this map
Bone Valley phosphate district
Polk · Hillsborough · Hardee · Manatee · DeSoto counties
Florida's historic phosphate heartland. Mining here dates to the late 1800s, and large areas of reclaimed mined land have since been developed into residential subdivisions.
Hamilton County / White Springs district
Hamilton · Columbia · Suwannee counties
North Florida's phosphate district around White Springs, mined from the 1960s onward and still the site of active and reclaimed operations.
House Bill 167, effective July 1, 2026 — and why an independent survey still matters
Under House Bill 167, a landowner of a former phosphate mining site can record a public notice and petition the Florida Department of Health for a free gamma survey of the property. Completing that process raises the evidentiary bar for future pollution lawsuits brought against that landowner.
It is a useful law, and it does not do the job a buyer or a resident needs done. The DOH route is petition-based, it takes time, and it produces a general per-acre reading of the parcel. It is not built to map hot spots room by room, in a raised garden bed, along a fence line, or in the corner of a yard where a child plays every afternoon.
A buyer evaluating a home before closing has no standing to petition at all — the property is not theirs yet. If you need a number before you sign, you need your own survey, on your own timeline.
If you want your own reading of a specific property, the phosphate-land gamma survey is $449 flat and includes a hot-spot map and written report.
Questions about this map
Is my address near a former phosphate mining area in Florida?
Enter the address in the lookup on this page and it is placed against the mapped Bone Valley and Hamilton County district outlines, with the distance to the nearest one. Outlines are approximate, so treat a close result as a reason to measure rather than a conclusion.
Which Florida counties had phosphate mining?
The Bone Valley district covers Polk, Hillsborough, Hardee, Manatee and DeSoto counties, and a second district sits around White Springs in Hamilton County with edges into Columbia and Suwannee. Bone Valley is where nearly all of the residential development on reclaimed mined land has happened.
Where does this map data come from?
District outlines are compiled from public Florida Department of Environmental Protection and USGS mining information and simplified for display. Community markers reflect the communities named in publicly reported litigation, with a source link on each.
Does being inside a district mean my property is contaminated?
No. The outlines show where mining historically occurred across a region, and much of the land inside them was never mined or reads unremarkably. Only an on-site survey produces a reading for a specific property.
Our radiation surveys are independent, informational measurements performed for personal due diligence. They are not represented as satisfying, replacing or substituting for any specific government agency's statutory testing, survey or disclosure requirement, and they are not a medical or health assessment.
