Ambient Background Baselines and Shielding-Effectiveness Testing
If you have built or bought a shelter, a safe room, or a hardened basement, you have a design assumption and no measurement. This service replaces the assumption with numbers: what your property reads normally, what the shelter reads, and how much the structure actually attenuates compared with the ground outside it.

Why a baseline is the whole point
A radiation reading only means something relative to something else. Without a documented normal for your own property, a future reading is uninterpretable — you cannot say whether it changed, because nobody wrote down where it started.
That is what a baseline is for. We record ambient background across the property and inside the structure, with locations, times and instrument calibration, so that a year from now there is a reference to compare against.
What we measure
Property-wide ambient background
Exterior grade, yard zones, and each level of the structure, so you have a documented normal rather than a single number from the front porch.
Shelter interior readings
Inside the shelter or safe room at occupant positions — where people would actually sit and sleep, not just at the doorway.
Comparative shielding effectiveness
Paired interior and exterior readings taken under the same conditions, so the report shows the measured difference the structure makes rather than a value quoted from a construction spec.
Weak-point identification
Doors, vents, hatches, penetrations and thin-wall sections, checked individually so you know where the structure's real gaps are.
Two separate offerings, priced together
Ambient background baseline
A documented normal for the property and the structure: exterior grade, yard zones, every level and the shelter interior, with locations, times and calibration data recorded so a future reading has something to be compared against.
Shielding-effectiveness testing
Paired interior and exterior readings taken under the same conditions at the same time, plus individual checks at doors, vents, hatches, penetrations and thin-wall sections, so the report shows measured attenuation and where the structure's real gaps are.
An honest limit on what this shows
We measure your structure against normal environmental background, which is the condition available to measure. We do not simulate an event, we do not model performance under a hypothetical source, and we make no prediction about protection in one. What you get is documented comparative attenuation and a permanent baseline — real data, honestly scoped.
What you receive
A written baseline report: property-wide ambient readings, shelter interior readings at occupant positions, paired comparative measurements showing measured attenuation, identified weak points with photographs, and the instrument calibration date.
Common questions
What does a shelter radiation baseline cost?
$449 flat per property, including the written report, anywhere in Florida with our standard travel zones. It covers the property-wide ambient survey plus the shelter interior and comparative readings.
Can you tell me if my shelter would protect me in an emergency?
No, and we will not pretend otherwise. We measure how much your structure attenuates normal environmental background compared with outside, which is a real, documented performance indicator — not a prediction about any specific event.
Why record a baseline if the readings are normal?
Because a normal reading today is the reference that makes any future reading meaningful. Without a documented starting point, a measurement taken later tells you a number but not whether anything changed.
Do you test new construction and retrofits?
Yes. Testing after the build is complete but before finishes go in is ideal, because weak points at penetrations and hatches are still accessible and correctable.
How it works
Three steps, no surprises
Book a consultation
Tell us the property, the item, or the facility and what prompted the call. We confirm scope, price and the travel zone in writing before anything is scheduled.
On-site survey with our calibrated instrument
We survey with the Radiation Alert Ranger, taking a local background reference first, then working the area to a fixed pattern so nothing is sampled by chance.
Receive your written report
A written report with the hot-spot map, every recorded reading against your own site background, photographs, and the instrument calibration date. Typically within 48 hours.
Methodology
How we survey — the actual method
Background reference first
Before anything else we record ambient background at the property line. Every later reading is reported against that number, because a reading only means something relative to local background.
Fixed-pattern coverage, not spot checks
Interior areas are walked room by room at a steady pace with the probe held at a consistent height. Yards and lots are walked on a grid — roughly 15-foot lanes on a typical residential lot, tightened where the meter responds.
Hot-spot confirmation
Anywhere the count rate rises above the site background, we stop, tighten the search, and take timed readings at the peak. A location is only recorded as a hot spot after it repeats on a second pass.
Priority zones get extra time
Bedrooms, children's play areas, garden beds, home offices and any spot where someone spends hours at a time are surveyed more densely than pass-through space.
Everything is documented
Each recorded reading is logged with its location, the value, the time, and the instrument calibration date, then plotted onto a floor plan and lot sketch in the report.
Who performs the survey and how we work
Surveys are performed by the owner-operator of EMF Testing Services, trained in survey-meter operation and in the survey procedure described on this page, working to the same written methodology on every job.
We hold no regulatory role and claim no agency standing. What we provide is a documented instrument reading set: where the meter was placed, what it read, when the instrument was last calibrated, and how those readings compare to the background level measured at your own property on the same day.
Our radiation surveys are independent, informational measurements performed for personal due diligence. They are not represented as satisfying, replacing or substituting for any specific government agency's statutory testing, survey or disclosure requirement, and they are not a medical or health assessment.
