Understanding EMF Radiation in Your Home: The Four Categories That Matter
Magnetic fields, RF, electric fields and dirty electricity behave differently, come from different sources, and need different meters. A plain-language map of what's actually in your house.
One word, four different phenomena
"EMF" gets used as a single thing, but a home survey measures four distinct categories with four different instruments: 60 Hz magnetic fields from wiring and motors, radio frequency from anything wireless, electric fields from energized cords and cables, and dirty electricity — high-frequency noise riding on your wiring.
Lumping them together is why online advice so often fails: the fix for a magnetic field from a wiring error has nothing in common with the fix for a mesh node on your nightstand.
Where each category usually comes from
Magnetic fields: wiring errors, unbalanced neutrals, panels, transformers and power lines. RF: routers, mesh nodes, smart meters, cell infrastructure, baby monitors. Electric fields: unshielded cords behind headboards and ungrounded devices. Dirty electricity: dimmers, LED drivers, solar inverters, variable-speed pool pumps.
Why measurement order matters
A proper survey measures all four in every occupied room, then weights the results by how much time you spend there. A moderate reading at your pillow for eight hours outweighs a high reading in a closet you open twice a week.
